Darel Clarke was attacked in the beer garden or smoking area of The Boat pub in Church Street in Wednesfield near St Thomas' CofE Church.

The 50-year-old suffered a 'serious head injury' according to police. He was then said to have made his way to the Royal Tiger Pub just down the road where an ambulance was called. He died in New Cross Hospital on Saturday.

Today, sources confirmed that former Wolves striker Leon Clarke is the son of the victim.

The club said in a statement: "Bury Football Club are aware of an incident over the weekend that brought the unfortunate death of Leon Clarke's father.

"As a club we extend our deepest sympathies towards Leon and the Clarke family.

"Leon will be allowed the time to grieve and will receive the full support of everyone at the Football Club during this difficult time."

Twitter users sent their sympathies to Leon Clarke:

A 22-year-old man has been arrested and bailed pending further enquiries.

Leon Clarke is now on the books of League One side Bury, who signed him on a three-year contract last July after his release from his hometown club.

Wolves opted against taking up the option of an additional year's contract, after shipping him out on loan to Wigan in February for the rest of the campaign.

The 30-year-old played for 11 different clubs after leaving Molineux for the first time in 2007, making over 100 appearances in two spells.

He's from the same East Park area from Wolverhampton that produced ex-pro Neil Lewis, former Walsall winger Mark Wright and current Brighton defender Connor Goldson.

Clarke played 87 minutes of an away League game at Fleetwood on Saturday.
