And nearly two complaints a week are being made to West Midlands Police.

A total of 52 complaints have been made to the force since the new law was introduced in April. A Freedom of Information request showed that the youngest victim was 13 and the oldest was 60.

Facebook was where the highest number of the sexual images had been posted, with 19 incidents. Instagram has been involved in four of the attacks and Whatsapp three.

It was also revealed that of the 52 cases reported to police only seven suspects were charged or summoned to court, with 15 cases still pending.

Six offenders received a caution, while 19 cases were dropped or set aside because of lack of evidence or because no suspect had been identified.

Force spokeswoman Gina Lycett said: "Since April we have had 52 offences reported to us and out of those we have charged 13 people.

"We are still investigating 15 cases of revenge porn and have had nine offences where the investigation was completed but an offender was unable to be identified.

"It is clear that we have a duty of care to address concerns of anyone who feel they have been the victims of online abuse especially involving the distribution of inappropriate or sexual content without permission. Each complaint will be dealt with on its merits, for example the distribution of indecent images of children will be dealt with by a specialist team."
