Stuart Millership today apologised for the 'anguish' this had caused the family of the victim, Baljit Singh from Meadow Road, Edgbaston who disappeared on December 23 last year after leaving his home to collect a birthday cake for his son.

The 50-year-old's body was found by police at about 9am on January 1 at a house in Beeches Road, Rowley Regis where Millership lived. Mr Singh died from head injuries and a knife wound to the neck.

The defendant also apologised for the lies he had told about the murder since his arrest when he appeared at Wolverhampton Crown Court this morning.

He pleaded guilty on a basis that has not been disclosed to the court but parts of it could be contested by the prosecution. Police and lawyers will make a final decision on Friday.

Mr Rex Tedd, QC, who leads the defence legal team, read just one paragraph from the basis of plea to the court. It stated: "I am truly sorry for the death of Baljit Singh and the anguish that this has caused his family, particularly his wife and son. I wish to apologise for my part in this offence and for my earlier failures to tell the truth."

Millership was remanded in custody until next Tuesday when there will be a further hearing of the case.
