A woman and two men have been arrested following the death of the man, 47, at the bedsit on Compton Road near Wolverhampton Grammar School.

Police were called by paramedics at around 8.30pm, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene at short time later.

The suspects are a 40-year-old woman from Chapel Ash and two men aged 44 and 51 from Chapel Ash and Heath Town.

Debbie Jones, 28, who lives in Larches Lane, off Compton Road, said: "It was a huge surprise when I saw about five police cars here last night because it is normally fairly quiet around here.

"It is quite scary to know that someone just a few yards away from you has been stabbed to death."

Terrance Keates, 44, who lives on Compton Road added: "It is quite worrying to know that this is happening on your doorstep."

Ruben Senior who lives on Larches Lane said: "To be honest I'm not surprised there is always trouble here. It's Wolverhampton, this is a regular occurrence."

Meanhwile, Dean Shercliff, 38, who knew the victim for several years, said: "I'm devastated, I knew the victim for six years and he was always good to me.

"He lived here for about twelve years.

"He was a very funny character and he is going to be missed by everyone who knew him around here. It wouldn't surprise me if hundreds turned up for his funeral - he was that popular.

"He was the type of guy who you could always go to for advice. He would listen to you and tell you what to do.

"I can't believe he has gone."

An emotional Luke Watkins, 36, told the Express & Star he had known the victim for many years.

"I'm absolutely devastated - he was my carer and looked out for me, I knew him since I was seven-years-old. How could anyone do this?" he said.

"He was a very intelligent person and could play an array of musical instruments. He loved music nearly all of his life and from the age of 14 or 15 would go to people and teach them music.

"He had more music qualifications than his music teacher - that's how clever he was."

They were arrested on suspicion of murder and were being held at police stations across the Black Country today.

The victim's family has been told and a post mortem examination was being held to determine the exact cause of death.

Detective Inspector Warren Hines said: "We're making good progress with our investigation but I'd still urge anyone with information which may help to get in touch."

"Neighbours have been spoken to and forensic experts continue to examine the property."
