DCI Chris Hanson said detectives had clear CCTV which would allow them to single out those who attacked family man Nick Cruwys as he returned home from last Saturday's Wolves game.

Addressing the attackers through an exclusive video interview with the Express & Star, he said: "Search your hearts. Do the right thing."

Mr Cruwys, 44, from Hemel Hempstead, was with a group of friends when he was assaulted in Little's Lane. He is now in a critical but stable condition

DCI Hanson, of the violent crime team, told the Express & Star: "He's a completely innocent man who was attacked by a group of males. He and his friends were completely overwhelmed and outnumbered and were kicked and beaten. What you would call pre-med in many ways. They have selected the victim and his friends and have set upon him.

"This is a completely unprovoked attack. The victim was completely innocent of any wrongdoing, he's a family man who has small children, he's self employed. Anybody now knowing that should come forward and tell the police if they were a witness.

"If they were involved, (they should) search their heart and do the right thing and come forward and contact us.

"We're very determined to trace absolutely everybody involved. We've got very clear CCTV, we will identify you, we will get you, we will knock your door. Do the right thing. Think of this family man with young children and come forward."

Mr Hanson praised the media for its support and said it had helped identify a number of witnesses.

He was speaking hours after a boy aged 13 was arrested in connection with the attack. An 18-year-old has been bailed.
