It came after police received reports of suspicious activity around a cash delivery van in the city centre.

Officers rushed to Waterloo Road, where an orange Ford Focus made off. The car was abandoned in Dudley Street near to the Mander Centre moments later and the occupants fled into the shopping centre.

Passers-by took to Twitter to share pictures of the scene.

A 28-year-old man, from Bushbury, was arrested in the centre's car park on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.

Police said that subsequent enquiries led to the suspect also being arrested on suspicion of robbery and conspiracy to rob, in connection with the attempted robbery of a cash delivery van at the Showell Circus Post Office on September 25 and a further robbery of a cash in transit vehicle, also on Showell Circus, at 6.30am today.

Detectives investigating the earlier robbery issued an appeal for information to trace the suspect on January 8.

A spokesman said enquiries were continuing to trace the other occupants of the Ford Focus.

West Midlands Police spokeswoman Sarah Buxton said: "A 28-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the theft of a stolen orange Ford Focus, following a foot chase by officers.

"The vehicle was abandoned near the Mander Centre and police are also searching for two other men who got out of the vehicle. The force helicopter assisted in the search for the suspects."

Anyone with information should call the Force Priorities Team in Force CID on 101.
