Antony Clewlow, 35, was caught after a League One match between Port Vale and Wolves on August 31 2013.

Problems flared up after the game, which Wolves won 3-1, when fans clashed near the Vale Park ground and around Burslem town centre in Stoke-on-Trent. Officers were pelted and a patrol car was smashed up .

CCTV showed Clewlow attempting to drag another man away from officers trying to arrest him, kicking out at a police dog and walking over a police car, waving to fans, North Staffordshire Justice Centre heard.

Prosecutor Mr Andrew Bodger said: "The defendant grabbed a man who was being detained, pulling him away from officers. He kicked out at a police dog, but it's difficult to see if any kicks actually landed."

He said that after climbing onto a police car and waving to crowds he made a 'V' sign to a CCTV camera. The plasterer from Church Street, Rookery, Stoke-on-Trent gave himself up after the trouble was featured in a local newspaper.

Mr Andrew Bennett, defending, said Clewlow became angry after a 14-year-old boy was knocked to the floor by people he believed to be police officers.

He said: "At the start, there was a young teenage boy who was knocked over in the chaos that followed. It is true he does blame the police to some extent. It was partly the fault of police that lad was knocked over."

Clewlow was jailed for 10 weeks after admitting using threatening, abusive, insulting words and behaviour, with intent to cause fear or provoke unlawful violence. He was had a six-year football banning order.
