Two temporary Jobcentres are being introduced in the Black Country as part of efforts to help people looking for work.

New temporary centres are being set up due to the impact of Covid on the economy

The sites at Crown Wharf, Walsall, and the Wulfrun Centre in Wolverhampton city centre are among 80 across the UK.

Other new centres in the West Midlands include two in Birmingham at Summer Hill Road and Newton Shopping Centre; one in Union Street, Burton upon Trent and another at Smithfield, Stoke-on-Trent.

They come as the latest unemployment and claimant figures for the West Midlands showed a rise last month. Across the West Midlands those claiming unemployment benefits have gone up 90.7 per cent in a year to 271,430.

The sites, some of which are already up and running, will be in addition to the 639 existing Jobcentres and will house some of the country’s 13,500 new work coaches – 10,000 of which have already been recruited.

More Jobcentres are expected to be announced in coming months.

Employment Minister Mims Davies said: “With more new, temporary Jobcentres in place in the heart of our communities, we can support even more people impacted by the pandemic to find work and progress into new roles.

“We’ve already boosted our DWP work coaches by 10,000 – and with these new local Jobcentres to operate from, we can drive forward our plan for jobs, creating fresh opportunity for people all across the country.”
