HS2 bosses sent out 'inaccurate' consultation leaflet, minister says

HS2 bosses have been criticised after wrongly claiming a consultation into the line would ignore the views of respondents.

Views are being sought from residents impacted by HS2

A public consultation into the Phase 2a section was launched last month, requesting the views of people in Staffordshire, Shropshire and Cheshire on the environmental impact of the works.

However, a leaflet sent out to residents by HS2 Ltd said "the Government does not intend to make changes to the Phase 2a scheme or to its planned construction programme in light of this consultation".

Transport Minister Andrew Stephenson has now said the leaflet was "inaccurate" and was sent out to households without the knowledge of Government officials.

He told the Star: "The unfortunate thing is that a leaflet went out basically saying that 'we are moving forward with the project and whatever people say isn't going to be taken seriously'.

"That is wrong and that leaflet has been withdrawn. Another leaflet is going out making it clear that all responses will be carefully considered."

Urging people to take part in the consultation, Mr Stephenson added: "Consultation and local communities are at the heart of this project. Any feedback we receive as part of this consultation, we will look at very seriously and we will consider whet we can do.

"It is right that we make people aware that the legislation has now passed, and that the legislation provides the planning consent.

"But that does not stop our desire to consult with local communities and to make changes where possible.

"I will be very keen to hear people's thoughts and feedback and would urge people to please let us know your views."

Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant, who brought the matter to the Minister's attention, said he was pleased that the Government "will take this consultation seriously".

"But this incident will have illustrated to Government, if any more were needed, how arrogant and crass HS2 are in their relationship with the general public they are meant to serve," he added.

The consultation runs until February 26.
