The victim's legs were crushed when he became trapped by the metal while on the back of a lorry at an industrial unit on Deepdale Lane, Lower Gornal, at 1.45pm.

Fire crews used specialist lifting equipment to free the man, who is in his 30s, before he was lowered off the lorry and rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

His injuries were described as 'serious'.

The air ambulance landed next to nearby Round House Road but medics decided to take the man to hospital by road.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman Claire Brown said: "Ambulance staff arrived to find a man who was partially trapped beneath several tons of steel on the back of a lorry.

"The fire service used specialist lifting equipment to release the man before ambulance staff were able to fully assess his injuries.

"The man had sustained serious crush injuries to his legs and required advanced trauma care by ambulance staff and the doctor on scene to help treat and stabilise his condition.

"The trust's hazardous area response team paramedics worked with the fire service to carefully lower the man from the back of the lorry to ground level before he was taken by land ambulance on blue lights to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

"The doctor travelled in the ambulance to continue treatment en route."
