Wassell Wood House has previously been owned by the Earl of Dudley, the Duke of Northumberland, ironmaster Thomas Foley – who founded Old Swinford Hospital School in Stourbridge – and George Foster, a director of Foster Clark's Custard Company.

The property, set in around 12 acres, near Bewdley, also featured in children's television programme The Box of Delights in 1984.

It is listed in Brooks and Pevsner, in the Buildings of England, as being built around 1840 but there is reference to a dwelling much earlier dating back to the 17th century.

The former home has been described by the estate agent marketing the property as a 'house full of history and character'.

The £1.25m price tag gets the buyer a drawing room, dining room, library, snug, morning room, kitchen/breakfast room, billiards room, six bedrooms – three of which are en-suite – and two family bathrooms.

An arched stained glass window and 12 gargoyles in the reception hall are among the interior features, while the dining room has an ornate decorative ceiling.

The library features a secret door leading through to the dining room and full length panelled double doors leading into the drawing room.

An inner hallway has an oak staircase to the first floor and leads to the informal reception rooms, cellarage and billiards room.

From here there is access onto the terrace courtyard and the coach house via a covered walkway, while the grounds also offer a pond, woodland, orchard and paddocks.

A brochure on property by estate agent Andrew Grant states: "The gardens and grounds are a particular feature of this property and extend to some 12.3 acres.

"The formal gardens, which comprise approximately two acres, fall away below the main house to take in the wonderful views from the terrace, which sweeps around the south facing façade, finishing on the west side of the property.

"A sunken rectangular pond is a particular feature of the garden along with mature Lebanon cedar trees and rhododendrons.

"To the rear of the property the gardens gently rise to a small orchard."
