Birmingham tunnels blocked after car flips over

A car flipped onto its roof after hitting a wall in the Birmingham tunnels in the early hours of this morning.

The vehicle sustained major damage following the dramatic smash near the entrance to the tunnel on Suffolk Street Queensway in the city centre.

The route was blocked while emergency services responded to the crash which happened at around 2.30am on Friday.

No-one is thought to have been hurt but debris was left strewn over the carriageway, which is used by thousands of drivers every day. The front bumper was ripped off after the heavy impact.

Police arranged for the mangled car to be transported from the tunnel before the stretch was re-opened.

West Midlands Fire Service spokesman Matthew Smith said: "We were called at 2.33am by the ambulance service to an overturned car just by the entrance to the tunnel of Suffolk Street Queensway.

"The crash involved one vehicle which has been in collision with a wall before coming to rest on its roof. No persons were trapped.

"Crews put the vehicle back on four wheels and made the vehicle safe."

The crash happened 12 hours after an elderly man was airlifted to hospital following a two-car smash in Lichfield.

The 74-year-old collapsed after getting out of the car outside Tesco on Birmingham Road, Shenstone, at around 2.15pm on Thursday and was helicoptered to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

The elederly woman driving the red car he had been a passenger in and a woman driving the second silver car were both said to be shaken but uninjured.
