Developers Rimstock Plc have said the expansion of the premises in Black Lake will 'contribute significantly' to the local economy.

The West Bromwich-based firm's growth has led bosses to seek a new plant and bigger premises, according to planning documents.

An application for a side and rear extension to the former Express & Star building has been submitted to Sandwell Council.

The company's headquarters is next to the site, in Ridgacre Road.

A design statement submitted as part of the planning package states: "Rimstock's growth has necessitated new plant and machinery, bigger premises and a more efficient production streams to increase output.

"Rimstock is working in partnership with Sandwell Council to create a larger production plant by expanding the existing operations into adjacent land and buildings, extending its existing properties and acquiring neighbouring works and warehouse buildings."

The statement concludes: "The proposed development and use represents significant investment in West Bromwich, Sandwell and the Black Country.

"It will create an additional 192 jobs at the site and indirectly contribute significantly more value to the local area through wages and supply chain benefits."

Councillor Paul Moore, the local authority's cabinet member for regeneration and economic investment, said: "I am extremely proud we have Rimstock – which is internationally renowned in its field – here in Sandwell, and to hear of the company's plans to stay in West Bromwich and expand.

"It also shows great confidence in the local supply chain and we look forward to working with the new owners in supporting their ambitious plans for continued growth."

Fellow Labour councillor for the Hateley Heath ward, Councillor Patricia Davies, added: "It is the most wonderful news for the area. The former Express & Star building has been closed for a long time, and I think it is amazing news that it could create almost 200 jobs."

The planning application also states: "This is a 4,500 sq metre extension, which together with the original building, will accommodate offices plus industrial functions, including a foundry, rotary forge, pre machining, flow forming and heat treatment.

"The proposed extension will be portal-framed with profiled steel cladding, and powder coated grey.

"The elevations include 'glazed' panels and the roof benefits from roof lights to maximise daylight and conserve energy."
