M6 traffic: Delays as smash caused tailbacks

Motorists have long delays after smashes on the M6 - but it was an opportunity for a canny ice cream seller.

Traffic ground to a halt on the M6 leaving motorists needing to find a way to cool off in the heatwave.

So this ice cream van opened up as motorists took the chance to grab a 99.

The M6 hit tailbacks in both directions between junction one for Rugby and junction two in Coventry following the crash around midday.

Motorist Colin Somerville captured the site as people cooled off with an ice cream while they waited for queues to clear following a crash.

The route had reopened in both directions by around 2.50pm.

Earlier queues of up to 45 minutes caused delays on the motorway through Great Barr, Wednesbury and Walsall.

The accident was reported around 9.30am blocking one lane northbound between junction nine for Wednesbury and junction 10 for Black Country (Walsall/Wolverhampton).

Highways England officials have been working to clear the motorway but warned of knock-on delays.

Traffic had to be temporarily stopped in the aftermath of the collision.

Delays led from junction 10 through to M6 junction seven at Great Barr and onto the M5 back to junction one at West Bromwich.

Highways England said the motorway was fully reopen between junction nine and ten northbound by 11.10am.
