Dozens gathered outside Waterstones in the city centre this afternoon, many with tape over their mouths.

Others taking part in the Black Lives Matter protest were holding placards with messages calling for "justice" and to "end police brutality."

A message posted on the event's Facebook page, states: "We're organizing this demo to avoid desensitization and dehumanization of the countless Black lives both in America and the UK and world wide that are told they don't matter, that are told this is just how things are. We're not taking it anymore."

The protest follows the police killings of Philando Castile in Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Louisiana, both this week.

Five police officers were then killed in a gun attack during a protest rally in Dallas.

The Dallas shooting suspect, Micah Johnson, is believed to have acted alone.
