Officers from the Central Motorway Policing Group clocked the star, who they did not identify, before 9am today.

They uploaded a picture to their Twitter feed with the speed recorded along with the message: "Caught speeding on the M6. Professional footballer reported for travelling at 97 mph."

It prompted a flurry of replies from fellow Twitter users who asked for the player to be outed.

But whoever it was, the footballer was not the fastest clocked today.

Another driver was caught near Stafford driving at 100mph

Shortly afterwards CMPG confirmed they caught up with another speeder travelling at 100mph on the M6 in the Stafford area.

Officers put out a similar post which said: "Another motorist in the ton up club along the M6 near Stafford today. Tell the magistrate about it."

Manchester City's Yaya Toure received a £2,000 fine in December when he was caught speeding at 101mph in his Porsche 911 on the M6 last May.
