Bright spark photographer's work is hot stuff

It looks like a scene fresh out of an action movie — but the stunt guy in this shot is the brave husband of Black Country photographer Steph Clarke.

Some clever camera techniques were used by Steph to capture this image of James when he was out in Baggeridge Country Park on Thursday evening.

It shows her husband dressed from head-to-toe and holding an umbrella, engulfed with burning wire wool that is being dropped from a disused railway bridge above.

Steph, co-founder of Wednesfield Photographic Club, used the technique of an exposure to capture the scene, where the photograph is taken over four seconds.

The 35-year-old said: "We made the effects of the photograph where a member of our group stood on the bridge above and dropped burning wire wool over him.

"We took some safety precautions although some of the wire managed to burn through his clothes and umbrella.

"He was wearing warm gloves and clothing and tried to cover as much flesh as possible.

"The burning wool looks incredible, it gives the effect that there are a lot more flames and sparks than there actually is.

"The wool gets very hot buts goes out quickly. It is safe as long as there isn't any naked skin and the ground is wet."

Steph took the photograph with her Nikon D7000, a 'mid-range DSLR camera', whilst out on a trip with her group.

The club is celebrating its one year anniversary this month which now has more than 100 members.

Steph says the group is a social club based around photography and is open to everyone of all abilities.

"It doesn't matter what camera you have, it is about photography and capturing what is around us," she said.

"We try out different techniques and help each other out and learn from other another."

Steph set up the group alongside her husband James, and two other people.

Photography is her hobby which she got into at college.

The Wednesfield Photographic Club meet every two weeks at The Hub at Ashmore Park, Wolverhampton.

The next meeting is May 12.
