Arsonists set woods on fire at Wombourne nature site

Woods at a protected nature site in Wombourne were set on fire by arsonists.

Fire crews were called to tackled the blaze at Highgate Common in Wombourne for more than an hour on Friday night.

The flames covered a 100 sq metre (1,076 sq ft) area.

Around 15 firefighters from crews at Wombourne, Kinver and Codsall stations were dispatched to the scene around 9pm. They had the blaze under control by 10.15pm and but were still using two hose-reel jets to damp down the affected area.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident was an arson attack.

A spokeswoman said: "The undergrowth was well alight and we had three appliances there at 9.01pm.

"They got it under control by 10.16pm but were still dampening down.

"The fire was started deliberately."

The site off Whitehouse Lane is registered as a Site of Specific Scientific Interest due to its rare creatures,
