M6 and M5 crashes and breakdowns cause morning delays

Crashes and breakdowns caused major delays for drivers on West Midlands motorways this morning.

Two separate crashes on the M6 northbound led to lane closures on the already congested motorway during rush hour.

Two lanes were blocked between Junction 5 for Castle Bromwich and Junction 6 (Spaghetti) for Birmingham after the first accident, causing delays of around 40 minutes back to Junction 4 for Coleshill.

A later crash blocked one lane of the exit slip road northbound at Junction 8 for the M5, causing delays from Junction 6. Two cars and a HGV were involved in the smash, but nobody was seriously injured.

Meanwhile a breakdown on the M6 southbound shut two lanes of the motorway between Junction 11 and Junction 10, causing delays of 30 minutes from Gailey.

And problems weren't restricted to the M6 - a broken down lorry led to two lanes of the M5 being closed northbound between Junction 2 for Oldbury and Junction 1 for West Bromwich.

The lanes were closed from around 8.30am causing delays of around 35 minutes until the road was fully reopened at 10am.
