Explosion that destroyed house near Smethwick 'was accidental'

[gallery]Fire investigators have said an explosion that blew the roof off a house near Smethwick was accidental.

Experts have carried out their initial assessment and said they believe the blast was started by the ignition of gas from a naked flame.

Twenty firefighters were sent to Wiggin Street in Ladywood on Wednesday after the front of the building was ripped off by the force of the blast.

There was also a partial collapse at the back of the house.

One man was taken to hospital with serious injuries while three homes close to the scene were evacuated.

As well as the firefighters, three fire engines, a 4x4 response vehicle and an aerial platform also attended.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent one ambulance, the Hazardous Area Response Team, a paramedic area support officer and a critical care paramedic.

A Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford with a trauma doctor on board was also dispatched to the scene.
