Three lanes of the M6 southbound were blocked as a result of the breakdown, causing huge tailbacks for drivers between the M54 and Birmingham.

The southbound entry road at Junction 7 for Great Barr was blocked, as were three lanes of the southbound carriageway.

The blockage caused major congestion as far back as Junction 10a and the M54.

By 10am the truck was being towed away and delays of 90 minutes were reported from Junction 11 for Cannock.

Meanwhile drivers on the M54 eastbound also faced delays after an accident at Junction 5 at around 10am. A man was taken to hospital and the entry slip road at Junction 5 for Telford was blocked for 45 minutes a result.
