Firefighters were called to the property in Bradburn Road, Wednesfield, after smoke was spotted billowing from an upstairs room just before midnight.

Paramedics and fire crews from Fallings Park and Wolverhampton battled in vain to save the woman.

The alert was raised at 11.57pm by a passer-by.

An ambulance service spokesman said: " West Midlands Ambulance Service received a 999 call to Bradburn Road at 12.10am and sent an ambulance, a community paramedic in a rapid response vehicle, a paramedic area support officer, a MERIT trauma doctor and the Trust's Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene.

"The fire service entered the house and rescued a woman from the bathroom of the property.

"They immediately started CPR once they got her outside.

"Ambulance staff took over treatment upon their arrival and commenced advanced life support but sadly it became apparent that nothing could be done to save her and she was confirmed dead at the scene.

"There were no other patients involved in the incident."

West Midlands Fire are investigating the cause of the blaze. Police have also launched an inquiry.
