The youngster was taken to New Cross Hospital in cardiac arrest and later transferred to Birmingham Children's Hospital due to the seriousness of its condition in October.

A man and a woman, aged 21 and 18 respectively, appeared at Wolverhampton Magistrates' Court charged with causing grievous bodily harm at the time.

They have also been charged with engaging in sexual activity with the baby and causing or allowing a child to suffer serious physical harm.

They were due before Wolverhampton Crown Court today for a preliminary hearing.

A decision will be made in due course on any potential changes to the charges the pair face.

Today Crown Prosecution Service Spokesman Vinny Bolina said: "We're aware of the death of the child and we are waiting for test results to ascertain the cause of death."

Two other women, aged 46 and 32, who were also arrested on suspicion of assault at the time have been eliminated from the investigation.
