People will get some help with the festive clean-up as a council starts a collection of Christmas trees for recycling.

Wolverhampton council will be collecting real Christmas trees during January.

The council's waste and recycling partner Amey Plc, will only collect real tress, not fake ones.

The service will be free and all people need to do is put their tree out on their normal recycling day next to their bin on the kerbside.

Real tree collections will take place from January 11 to January 22.

Councillor Steve Evans, cabinet member for city environment, said: "We're very pleased to be able to provide a free real Christmas tree collection service for people once again in Wolverhampton.

"It is one less thing for people to worry about as we all get back to work in the New Year. All people need to do it put their real tree out on the kerbside on their normal recycling collection day between January 11 and 22.

"We would ask that people don't put their trees in the bin, just place it next to your bin out on the street. This will make it nice and easy for the crews to see it and take it away to be recycled.

"We would stress that this service is for real Christmas trees and not plastic ones."

Meanwhile, extra collections will be taking place for those that had collections cancelled due to Christmas Day and Bank Holiday Monday.

They were taking place today and on Monday (January 4).

Excess waste can be put out on those extra collection days, but recycling must be presented in clear or white open bags or open boxes.

Residents have been sent calendars advising them of collection dates and people can also find out their scheduled collection days online at www.wolverhampton.gov.uk and using the 'Find My Nearest' feature.
