A lane and the hard shoulder was closed for several hours on the M54 between junctions 6 and 5 eastbound at around 2.30pm.

But as emergency services worked at the scene this driver decided to try and avoid the chaos by turning around on the slip road heading on to the motorway.

Unknown to the driver, a team from the West Mercia Police Operational Patrol Unit for Shropshire were also heading along the same route.

They took this photo and tweeted: "The M54 reopened. We had to advise an impatient motorist who chose to drive the wrong way up the 'on slip'.

"Never drive on the hard shoulder or drive the wrong way up a motorway slip road unless directed to do so."

No one was injured in the accident and Highways England and that Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) were called to the scene.

One lane was closed as well as the hard shoulder for around three hours as recovery took place.

West Mercia Police had been notified by numerous calls from members of the public.

A spokeswoman for Highways England said: "A van had overturned and ambulance and firefighters also attended. A road closure was in place between junctions 6 and 5 eastbound."

Firefighters from Telford Central also attended who worked to make the light goods van electrically safe.
