Security upped in West Bromwich as travellers move in

Gates on playing fields in West Bromwich have been secured after travellers broke onto the site for the second time in just weeks.

An illegal camp set up on Churchfields in Newton Road stopped children's football matches being played.

The clean up of the site has cost more than £500, with concrete blocks now put in place to try to deter a recurrence of the issue.

Councillor Paul Moore, cabinet member for regeneration and economic investment at Sandwell Council, said: "We've had to increase security to stop this happening again.

"It's not fair on the football teams who use the fields to have their matches called off and the grass damaged.

"Security has now been improved and we'll continue to work with the police to not only prevent illegal encampments but to remove them when they gain illegal access onto council land."

The travellers were removed from the site after the council worked with the police to serve notice on them.

This order banned them from the site and anywhere within a three mile radius.
