A total of six engines and 35 firefighters were needed to tackle the fire at the disused Westway pub in Highfields.

Fire crews were called at 6.45pm after police officers found smoke in the building.

Police had initially visited the pub at around 4.20pm after reports of anti-social behaviour.

Having found the building to be insecure, officers then notified the company in charge of the premises who in turn called police back when they encountered further anti-social behaviour after arriving to secure the building.

At that point Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called.

No-one is believed to have been evacuated from the building which stopped operating as a pub in 2013.

As well as the six engines, fire crews used an aerial platform to battle the large scale incident.

Despite their efforts, the blaze has caused severe damage and led to the roof collapsing.

Residents were advised to avoid the area and keep all windows and doors closed.

Westway was closed near to Newport Road.
