Sir Lenny was speaking to ITV News shortly after being knighted when the channel cut to a clip of Ainsley Harriott dancing on stage at The Comedy Store.

The 57-year-old Comic Relief co-founder was discussing his views on diversity when the mishap saw the celebrity chef appear dancing on screen in hat and shorts.

ITV News has since apologised for the error.

In a statement on Twitter ITV News said: "ITV News apologises for the error broadcast in the lunchtime news package today regarding Sir Lenny Henry's knighthood at the palace.

"This was the result of an error in the production process in a piece intended to celebrate Sir Lenny's significant achievements."

Lenny Henry was trending on Twitter in the wake of the clip's broadcast.

Sir Lenny was knighted for services to drama and charity by the Queen at a ceremony at Windsor Castle.

Afterwards he devoted the award to his family and to the people of Dudley, before vowing to ensure that Comic Relief contiues.

Sir Lenny said: "It's just an extraordinary thing. When you're stood there waiting with the man you suddenly sober up and go 'actually this is quite a serious thing'."
