The van ended up on its side against railings as a result of the crash which happened on Old Heath Road at around 2.15am.

The driver is understood to have fled the scene.

Fire crews worked for around two hours to remove the passenger from the white Renault Kangoo which had its rear end suspended in the air.

Pictures from fire commander Andy Smith show firefighters using machinery to cut through the front of the van in order to reach the man, who was conscious but unable to escape due to damage to the vehicle.

He was taken to Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital with a suspected head injury and a fractured arm.

A man in his 20s was later found hiding behind a bin by a police dog called Bear and his handler. He was taken to hospital with a minor head injury.

Police said later that a man had been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman Claire Brown said: "Ambulance staff weren't able to reach the man initially due to the vehicles position but could see that his legs and arm were trapped and he was fully conscious.

"Whilst the fire service worked to right the vehicle back onto its four wheels, ambulance staff talked to the man to reassure him whilst carefully monitoring his condition as well as the progress of the work being undertaken around him.

Fire crews from Fallings Park attended the scene alongside officers from West Midlands Police and West Midlands Ambulance Service.
