Drivers in Stone face two months of disruption with roadworks starting which are part of plans to develop a business park and build a new power station.

One lane on Newcastle Road will be closed from the A34 Fillybrookes junction with a one-way system put in place.

The scheme to lay new utilities is being carried out from October 26 until December 18.

The work will mean traffic will only be able to travel in a north westerly direction out of Stone towards the A34. There will be no access onto the Newcastle Road at the Fillybrooks roundabout.

A temporary bus stop will be placed between the Trent Road junction and the railway bridge for buses going to Stone.

Staffordshire County Councillor Mark Winnington, chief of economy, said: "The development at Meaford will bring a derelict brownfield site back into productive use, regenerate the area and see the creation of over 2,000 jobs.

"Providing the roads and services to this site is an essential first phase of the development and we want to complete this work as quickly as possible.

"We understand that these are busy roads and would like to thank people for their patience while the scheme is carried out.

"This is an important development for Staffordshire which will bring real economic benefits to our county."

The Meaford Business Park project will see the complete transformation of the 85-acre plot which is the largest brownfield site in Staffordshire.

The scheme also includes a £300 million power station which will be fully operational by 2020.

Once utility services are installed further phases of infrastructure works will follow which are estimated to be completed by the spring.

St Modwen will then be able to move on to the site and begin building work.

A county council spokesman confirmed that work was on schedule but added that certain parts of the development would still be subject to planning permission by Stafford Borough Council.
