Luke Page put his foot down when officers ordered him to stop in Sutton Road, Walsall on March 7, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

The 21-year-old accelerated so quickly in the red Vauxhall Astra that he was soon out of sight. Miss Sarah Allen, prosecuting, concluded: "This was a concerted attempt to evade capture by the police at speeds that reached 100 mph."

Police lost the car during the four mile chase as it hurtled through up to four sets of red traffic lights and sometimes travelled on the wrong side of the road before the Astra was abandoned in Walsall Wood Road, Aldridge.

A police patrol spotted Page walking nearby soon afterwards and arrested him. A breath test showed he had a reading of 49 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35. Officers also discovered he had neither insurance nor a driving licence.

Mr Oliver Woolhouse, defending, said: "He has had a problem with binge drinking but has voluntarily been receiving treatment for that and now appears to be straightening things out."

Page from Barnes Lane, Rushall admitted dangerous driving, driving with excess alcohol, and having neither insurance nor a valid licence. He was sent to prison by Judge Nicholas Webb who said: "This was terrifyingly dangerous driving. It is so lucky that nobody was killed.

"This was not a momentary error of judgement. It was a prolonged course of driving at speeds up to 100mph. Had there been oncoming traffic when you drove on the wrong side of the road they would have had little or any chance of avoiding a collision that would almost certainly have been fatal."
