Yesterday's match - which saw the Baggies win at Villa Park - saw no reported flashpoints, and all arrests were for minor offences.

The arrests

  • A 47-year-old man from Aldridge detained in a pub car-park for breaching his Football Banning Order which prohibits him being in Birmingham before matches; he will answer that charge at Birmingham Magistrates Court on October 19.

  • A 20-year-old Albion supporter, from Worcester, was charged with a public order offence for gaining entry to the home end and goading fans at the final whistle.

  • A 17-year-old was arrested after the game on suspicion of assaulting a steward during the August 29 visit of Sunderland to Villa Park.

  • Two men – a 46-year-old from Pype Hayes and 29-year-old from Erdington – were arrested on suspicion of assault at half-time in Villa Park’s Holte Suite; both have been bailed pending further enquiries.

  • A 25-year-old from Kingstanding was arrested on public order grounds after he allegedly abused staff at a bar inside the stadium; he’s been bailed while officers secure statements from bar staff.

  • A 23-year-old from Stourport was arrested on suspicion of running onto ground adjacent to the pitch when West Brom scored; he’s also been bailed to allow officers time to examine CCTV footage.

Elsewhere, three men aged 41, 28 and 19 from Brierley Hill, Stourport and Rowley Regis respectively were issued fixed penalty fines for being drunk and disorderly.

A 40-year-old salesman from Wednesbury and a 24-year-old man from Brierley Hill were both given police cautions after admitting public order offences, while a 60-year-old man from Wednesbury arrested to prevent a breach of the peace by taunting rival fans was later released without charge.

Inspector Howard Lewis-Jones, said: "Fans may have feared a repeat of last season's problems at this fixture but I hope they came away yesterday reassured that the main talking point was the football and not any disorder.

"Transport police oversaw the arrival of 'Baggies' fans at Witton Station – it meant on that side of the ground there was only limited crossover of rivals fans – and club security made tweaks to help deter encroachment on the pitch or crowd trouble.

"We had plenty of officers on the ground in the right places, including in the bar areas. Our focus is to engage with fans and contribute to an enjoyable atmosphere…but being clear that anyone who oversteps the mark and commits offences will be arrested."
