Arsonists have again set fire to a derelict Wolverhampton pub, destroying more than half of the building.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at the old Monkey House pub in Kent Road at 2.12am today.

Plans to turn the pub into a care home were recently approved

A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service said: "This was a fire at a two storey void public house.

"100 percent of the first floor and the roof have been destroyed. The fire is arson."

Firefighters from Bilston, Wolverhampton and Fallings Park remained at the scene until around 7am. West Midlands Police also attended the fire.

Plans for the pub to be turned into two care homes were approved last month. The £3 million scheme would create 45 jobs.

In 2011, the pub was also targeted by arsonists – twice in the same night.

Both incidents involved rubbish being set alight at the back of the property.
