He said: "So glad everything has been cleared up today and ur support with it is amazing not that we could ever expect anything less your amazing."

"Can't wait to put more time into everything we do and coming out with something great."

In a final tweet to his 20.8 million followers, the 21-year-old thanked the many disappointed Directioners around the world for everything they've done for the band.

The band are currently in Chicago, midway through a tour of North America.

All four members - Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan thanked Chicago fans for what Tomlinson described as a 'siiiiiiick' Illinois show.

They are returning to Europe in September and will play three gigs at Birmingham's Barclaycard Arena in October.

Ticket prices for the tour are now expected to rocket, as it will be fans' last chance to see the band live for the indefinite future.

Tickets for 1D's Saturday night Birmingham performance are already selling for up to £160 on online marketplace Viagogo.

The original value of tickets ranged from £43.45 to £71.50.

The band rose to fame in the 2010 series of reality TV show The X Factor and have so far released four studio albums.

The current tour is the first without Zayn Malik, who left the band in March.

A fifth album is on the way, however, the news of the split means there will be no follow up tour.
