Telecoms worker who died after horror crash named as Oldbury man Matt Harding

A telecoms engineer who died more than a day after he and a colleague were hit by a car in Coseley has been named locally as Oldbury man Matt Harding.

The 27-year-old was working on a communications box at the junction of Jack Holden Avenue and Robert Wynd in Woodcross.

Mr Harding, who is reported to work for Virgin media, and a colleague were struck by a grey Citroen Picasso just after midday on Monday and rushed to hospital.

One died last night. The other suffered a broken arm and jaw, and a twisted ankle. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Two boys, both aged 16, were arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and have been released on police bail.

Brigitte Trafford, chief corporate affairs officer at Virgin Media said: "Following a serious accident on Monday when a car struck two of our engineers who were working on a roadside cabinet in Coseley, one has since died from his injuries. Our deepest sympathies and condolences are with the families involved. We are assisting the Police with their investigation."

Tributes have been paid on the Express & Star's Facebook page to Mr Harding.

Michelle Chambers wrote: "R.i.p matt top bloke x".

Danielle Banner-Francis said: "R.i.p Matt thoughts are with your dear wife and children and your family and friends, taken far to early!!! Xxx".

Sgt Paul Hughes, from the force's Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This is a deeply tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased.

"Our investigation is underway and I am still appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision and has not spoken to a police officer to get in touch with us on 101."
