The HGV came off the road opposite The Church of St John in the Square on Ring Road St John, at around 7.45 am today.

The lorry is thought to have been heading in the direction of Penn Island when it veered across the central reservation and into oncoming traffic.

Motorists were left stunned as the lorry mounted the curb and ploughed through a three foot high wall, knocking down a tree and leaving bricks, branches and leaves strewn across the carriageway.

Police have launched an investigation to find out how the crash happened.

Following the smash the front wheels of the lorry were suspended off the ground after its cab became wedged against the wall and a tree.

No one was injured in the crash.

Drivers faced delays of up to 45 minutes as part of the road was blocked off while highways workers removed debris from the road. There were long queues of traffic in both directions.

A recovery team removed the lorry from the road, which re-opened fully by 11am.

West Midlands Police spokeswoman Gina Lycett said: "We received a call at 7.44am reporting that a lorry had gone into a wall near to the St John's Retail Park in Wolverhampton City Centre.

"On attending the scene officers found there was damage to the lorry and a wall. No one was injured in the incident.

"A recovery vehicle attended and removed the lorry from the scene. We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash."
