The 38-year-old is now said to be in a stable condition following the injury to his shin in West Smethwick Park in Victoria Road just after 7.15pm yesterday evening.

An investigation has been launched and police believe the suspect left the park on a BMX style bike, heading in the direction of Smethwick.

Detective Sergeant Chris Jones, from Force CID, said: "This was a serious attack and the victim is fortunate to only have suffered relatively minor injuries.

"A team of officers are now scouring CCTV cameras from the area and following up other lines of enquiry as part of our investigation.

"Offences involving firearms are rare in this area and I want to appeal to anyone who was at the park last night and saw anything suspicious to contact us as soon as possible on 101."

Alternatively information can be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
