Five from Walsall in court charged with Syria-related terrorism offences

Two men and three women from Walsall have today appeared in court charged with Syria-related terrorism offences.

The five appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court accused of charges including preparing to travel to Syria to engage in terror and helping others to travel.

Ayman Shaukhat

On and before October 29, 2014, with the intention of assisting another, namely Sajid Aslam, to commit acts of terrorism, engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to his intention contrary to s5(1)(b) Terrorism Act 2006.

On and before November 19, 2014, with the intention of assisting another, namely Alex Nash, to commit acts of terrorism, engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to his intention contrary to s5(1)(b) Terrorism Act 2006.

On or before June 9, 2015, possessed a document or record, which is of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism contrary to s58(1)(b) Terrorism Act 2000.

Alex Nash

On and before November 4, 2014, with the intention of committing acts of terrorism, engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to his intention contrary to s5(1)(a) Terrorism Act 2006.

Yousma Jan

On and before November 25, 2014, having information which she knew or believed might be of material assistance in securing the apprehension, prosecution or conviction of another person, namely Alex Nash, in the United Kingdom, for an offence involving the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism, did not disclosure that information as soon as reasonably practicable to a constable contrary to s38B Terrorism Act 2000.

Kerry Thomason

On and before August 10, 2014, with the intention of assisting another, namely Isaiah Siadatan, to commit acts of terrorism, engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to her intention contrary to s5(1)(b) Terrorism Act 2006.

Lorna Moore

Ayman Shaukat, 27, of Pargetter Street, Alex Nash, 21, of Bentley Road, and Nash's wife Yousma Jan, 20, also of Bentley Road, were all arrested at their home addresses in a series of dawn raids last Tuesday.

Two more women, Lorna Moore, 34, of Glebe Street, and Kerry Thomason, 23, of an undisclosed address, were detained in February and had been bailed until yesterday.

Shaukat was charged with assisting two men to travel to Syria to engage in terrorism, one of who - Sajid Aslam - is suspected to now be fighting with ISIS. He was further charged with possession of a terrorist document.

Nash appeared alongside Shaukat accused of preparing for acts of terrorism.

Nash's 20 year old wife Yousma Jan was also in the dock charged with failing to disclose information about her husband's activities.

Thomason was charged with assisting her husband, Isaiah Siadatan, to travel to Syria to engage in suspected terrorism. He is also believed to have joined ISIS with Aslam and another man known to the group, Jacob Petty.

Moore, the fifth defendant, who is married to Aslam, was accused of failing to disclose information about her husband's planned travel to the conflict zone.

Moore and Jan pleaded not guilty. Nash, Shaukat and Thomason were not required to enter a formal plea.

Moore and Thomason were granted conditional bail. Jan, Nash and Shaukat were remanded. All five will appear at the Old Bailey on June 26.
