Following his arrest the man was charged with a string of offences. They include: failing to stop; dangerous driving; driving while disqualified; driving without insurance; failing to provide a specimen and possession of cannabis.

A helicopter was deployed as police pursued the man around Wednesfield after spotting him in Castlebridge Road, near Willenhall.

The chase came to a sudden halt in Northycote Lane when police snared the 30-year-old's car with a stinger. But he fled on foot before later being found on the nearby stretch of the motorway in South Staffordshire.

The drama happened in the early hours of yesterday morning.

West Midlands Police spokesman Tom Lees said: "A green Peugeot 306 was spotted by officers in the Castlebridge Road and was eventually brought to a stop in Northycote Lane with the use of a stinger.

"The 30-year-old driver then ran off on foot but was found by officers and detained. He remains in police custody."
