The fire service was called to the Chequer Street, Bradmore address just after 5pm yesterday, with two crews from Wolverhampton Fire Station in attendance, backed up by a crew from Bilston station.

A small fire in the downstairs living room had to be put out, and Wolverhampton crews rescued a woman from a smoke-logged upstairs bedroom and performed first aid until the ambulance service arrived.

The hamster was rescued by Bilston's watch commander John Wildman.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
