Curtis Knowles, 24, was the front seat passenger in a Ford Focus stopped by police in a street in Wolverhampton.

Mr Andrew Keogh, prosecuting at the city's crown court, said: "Initially, their interest was that it was a hire vehicle and they wanted to check the documentation of the driver."

But the officers launched a search of the vehicle and its two occupants after finding a wrap of cannabis after the men were asked to get out of the car on October 10.

They found a haul of heroin and cocaine with a street value of £2,000 in the possession of Knowles, who also had £700 cash on him.

The defendant had been fighting a £200-a-week heroin habit and owed his dealer £1,800.

Mr Richard Gibbs, defending, explained: "He got involved in the sale of drugs to pay off the debt after finding himself in a position where he felt he had little choice but to act as a conduit between those to whom he owed money and those who wanted to buy drugs."

Knowles had a prolific heroin and cocaine habit but had been clean since his arrest in October after which he had been held in custody waiting for the case to be resolved. He had nine previous convictions involving 23 offences, seven of which were drug related.

Knowles from Leicester Street, Whitmore Reans, admitted possessing heroin and cocaine with intent to supply and was jailed by Recorder Derek Sweeting QC who told him: "I hope this is a turning point for you."

No further action was taken against the driver of the car in which the defendant had been travelling when arrested.
