Crews from Fallings Park were called to the blaze, which broke out in the living room of a flat on Anston Way just after 11am today.

The cause was a wall-mounted electrical fire.

The two cats were outside of the flat when crews arrived but ran back inside after hearing the sound of the fire engine.

Watch commander Tony Jackson, of Fallings Park fire station, said: "When we arrived, the front doors of the flat were open and the two cats were outside.

"We think our fire engine scared them because they ran back inside, so we had two send firefighters wearing breathing apparatus back in to fetch them.

"They actually put up a fight and were hiding under furniture but we managed to get them out safely in the end.

"The family had a working smoke alarm but it hadn't been fitted so in light of this we would urge people to make sure there smoke alarms are fitted and working.

"If that would have been the case here, we could have prevented more damage being done."

The flat, which was on the first floor of a two-storey building, was left with five per cent damage as a result of the fire, with crew members having to use a ventilation machine to prevent further smoke damage.

Crews left the scene just after 12pm . The homeowner and her two children were not hurt.
