Tony Sutton, aged 71, of Lavender Road, Dudley, discovered the tiny egg between two regular sized ones.

He said: "I went down the bottom of the garden to see what had been laid and was so shocked when I discovered this tiny little egg.

"It is so unbelievably small.

"I have been breeding birds for a long time, but I have never come across one like this.

"I picked it up and carried it safely to my wife to show her, she was just as shocked as I was."

Since discovering the egg, Mr Sutton has been taking precautions to make sure it is being kept as safe as possible.

He added: "After I took it in the house I wanted to examine it to see if it had developed.

"I was really shocked to find that it actually had a full yolk in it.

"I would never dream of cracking it open, I have just been keeping it wrapped up safe in the fridge, I do not want to get rid of it."

Mr Sutton has been breeding both chickens and birds for more than twenty years and has Becky for two and a half.

He added: "I bred Becky myself, she has been laying for around nine months now.

"It is very strange as she has not laid again since this tiny egg.

"She seems fine though, I am sure that there is nothing wrong with her health."

Mr Sutton is yet to have the egg measured. Even though the Guinness Book of Records does not collect records of the worlds smallest egg laid by a hen, Mr Sutton is still keen to know its size.

He added: "I cannot measure it myself, it is simply too small and I would be too scared of accidentally breaking it."

Prior to breeding birds, Mr Sutton and his wife Jean, 63, ran a number of pubs and social clubs across Dudley and Rowley Regis before they both retired.

They have five children, Nina, 43, Jason, 42, Ricky, 41, Angela 33 and Adrian, 32.
