The accident involving one vehicle happened on the A34 between Stone and Stafford.

Emergency services including police and paramedics were called to the scene near Aston Island at around 4pm yesterday.

The southbound side was able to re-open after just over an hour but the opposite side remained shut until later in the evening.

Motorists were advised by police through social media to stay away from the area while the investigation was being carried out.

A statement on the Staffordshire Police Facebook account said: "Sadly we can confirm officers are dealing with a fatal collision - only one vehicle involved.

"Emergency services were called to the scene just after 4pm."

It comes after another man died on the A500 in Staffordshire after an accident between a HGV and cyclist.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called just after 5.35am yesterday on the northbound carriageway between the Porthill and Kidsgrove junctions.

The man was taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital but confirmed dead shortly after arrival.

Anyone with information on the Stone crash should call 101.
