The keen runner and West Bromwich Albion fan has already completed three days of the Marathon Des Sables through the Sahara Desert and was yesterday gearing up for a tough 90km stretch.

The 58-year-old's six day adventure is raising money for the Baggies' charity The Albion Foundation.

Mr Heeley's progress is being tracked through the Twitter feed @WBAFoundation.

During previous days he has completed 36km sections of the course in blisteringly hot conditions of 38 degrees as he aims to finish the entire 160 mile length.

He is also posting regularly on his Twitter feed @blinddaveheeley and told his followers how a sandstorm was brewing prior to departing on his latest 61 mile section.

He said: "Today, the survivors will begin their long leg, with its 91.7k longest distance in the history of the Marathon Des Sables."

Prior to starting the marathon, he trained at the University of Birmingham's School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitationsciences.

Once inside, users are subjected to extremes of heat and humidity to help prepare them for extreme temperatures.

Temperatures are set to between 35 and 50 degrees.
