Eyesore landmark Hednesford pub to be replaced with care home

An eyesore pub will be knocked down and replaced with a care home after plans were given the go-ahead.

The Globe Inn, in Hednesford, has been closed for years and its windows boarded up.

Cannock Chase District Council's planning control committee yesterday voted to approve the 20-bed development, which will bring 18 jobs.

Developer Steven Chahal Singh wants to incorporate a shop and five flats into the scheme for the East Cannock Road site.

The approval came despite Hednesford Green Heath ward representative Councillor Bob Todd ward moving a motion for the project to be refused on grounds of traffic and that it was out of character with the area.

"I think this is a joke. This is over intensification of the site. It goes across an industrial site. There are no facilities there," Councillor Todd said.

But after a tight vote the members gave the designs the green light, seven for and six against, along with conditions that 18 car parking spaces are provided.

Hawks Green representative Councillor John Bernard said: "We cannot have a pub standing empty and looking like a disgrace.

"The frontage of the care home will not be so bad because it's down in a dip."
