Police are hunting for a man after a woman was sexually assaulted in a Wednesbury alleyway.

The attack happened as the 26-year-old victim cut through the alley linking Redhouse Avenue and Pound Road just after 9pm.

Officers are trawling hours of CCTV footage from the local area and forensic evidence is being fast-tracked by scientists.

Patrols in the area have been stepped up to reassure concerned locals since the attack on Monday, while the woman is being supported by specialist sex offence agencies and police officers.

The offender is understood to be an Eastern European white man ? possibly Polish ? in his late 30s or early 40s, around 6ft tall and of slim build.

He smelled of alcohol and cigarettes and was believed to have been wearing a brown leather jacket with a pale stripe, black shoes and dark coloured jeans.

Investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Chisholm, said: "An attack of this nature by a stranger is rare.

"We have a team of detectives working around the clock to find the man responsible.

"We're widening our appeal from within the immediate area and asking anyone who was in the area at the time and who has not already spoken to officers to come forward.

"I need anyone who saw the woman before the attack or immediately after to call me. I am also keen to hear from anyone who's seen a man matching the description provided by the victim."

Anyone with information which may help Det Chief Insp Chisholm should call 101. People who don't want to speak with police officers directly can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
