The 25-year-old pedestrian was struck by the vehicle on the A41 Birmingham Road shortly after 3pm today.

The road has been closed to traffic to allow an air ambulance to land but she has now been taken to Queen Elizabeth hospital by road.

Those who witnessed the incident said the woman had been carried some distance by the car.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said the woman had a suspected broken pelvis and 'nasty' fractures to her leg and arm.

They added: "The woman, who was being cared for by bystanders, was breathing and fully conscious but had sustained multiple fractures.

"The medic and ambulance staff worked to stabilise the woman by administering pain relief and immobilising her with a pelvic splint, neck collar and scoop stretcher."

West Midlands Police said they were now investigating the incident.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area.
