A petition has been launched against plans to build a new supermarket on the site of a landmark pub in Dudley.

Aldi has lodged proposals to demolish The King Arthur, beside the Birmingham New Road to make way for the store.

But West Midlands MEP Bill Etheridge is now calling on council bosses to reject the scheme and for the building to be saved from the bulldozer.

Councillors refused Aldi permission to demolish the pub in September, telling bosses they needed detailed proposals. The supermarket has now produced detailed documents, saying the 1,000 sq ft store will create 40 jobs and have a 94-space car park.

Mr Etheridge, who represents Sedgley on Dudley Council, claimed the store would generate traffic on the already congested Priory Road which sees traffic often queuing as far as The Broadway at peak times.

He added: "I also fear the creation of an Aldi on this site would severely impact on the trade of nearby small retailers in Priory Road.

"The development would also see the loss of trees and would throw local roads into greater traffic-choked chaos.

"I urge people to sign my petition and Save the King Arthur which could be a jewel in the crown for the local area."

Aldi said vehicles would access the shop from Priory Road with the Birmingham New Road entrance closed off.
