Fears have been raised for the state of Wolverhampton's roads after almost half a million pounds was slashed from a budget.

Wolverhampton City Council pressed ahead with plans to cut £400,000 from its highways maintenance budget.

The funding cut was approved as part of the local authority's latest budget, voted in by full council last week.

But Tory opposition leader Councillor Wendy Thompson said the city's roads were already suffering from serious wear and tear and did not need another top slice from their funding.

She added: "The approach of this Labour council has never taken account of the real need of a given surface unless it has suited their political aims and highways maintenance is just one of the services that suffers as a result.

"I have received an increasing number of complaints about deteriorating road surfaces and potholes as a result."

Councillor Thompson added that, budget pressures aside, highways maintenance was one area which now did require some protection.

She said: "It is not only about the impression people from outside get of Wolverhampton, but also one of road safety."
